On Thursday and Friday of last week, Rick Glassman came and spoke to the 4th grade students about animals of Indiana. Through Mr. Glassman's entertaining presentation and nature games, the students were able to learn a little more about the natural life surrounding them! (See photos below) :)

Brain Teaser
In last year's St. Patrick's Day Parade, there were twenty-four floats and twenty-six marching bands. It takes three minutes for each unit (float or band) to pass the reviewing stand. If the first unit passed the reviewing stand at 12:42 p.m., what time will the last unit pass the reviewing stand?

Mathathon Marvels!
The class really blew me away with their efforts towards raising money for the St. Jude's Mathathon! They earned almost $700 (the school's goal was $1,000). I am very proud of these kids and the lengths they went to to raise money for children in need!
An enormous THANK YOU goes out to these students:

Simple Six
Tomorrow is the writing prompt for ISTEP. When writing, students are asked to think about the Simple Six rubric. This rubric is used to score each prompt (one point is earned for each component included):
1. Stick to the topic: Writing sticks to the topic and does not run away with other ideas. Writing addresses all the questions presented in the prompt.2. Logical order: Thoughts are presented in logical order with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Transitions such as “first, next, then, and finally” are used. Writing follows order of events suggested by prompt.
3. Interesting words: Uses sophisticated or challenging vocabulary. Writer takes advantage of opportunities to go back and insert interesting words. Uses strong adjectives and precise verbs.
4. Different sentence patterns: Uses a variety of sentence types – does not sound like a list. Includes questions when appropriate. Uses commas in series. Uses exclamations if appropriate.
5. Description and details: Paragraphs have topic sentences with supporting details. The senses are used to help the reader feel what the writer is trying to say.
6. Audience: Writing is original, lively, personal, and appropriate for the audience.

World War I Persuasive Posters
In our brief study of World War I several weeks ago, the class learned about ways Hoosiers and other Americans helped aid WWI war efforts. We also discussed the propaganda that was used to persuade people to support efforts such as joining the army, buying bonds, saving and growing food for the soldiers, etc.
Each student created their own persuasive poster based on one of the WWI efforts we discussed in class. Many of the students "thought outside the box" and invented some catchy phrases of their own!
Check out the pictures below! :)
